rotary tiller for a BX24

I have several questions relating to using a rotary tiller with a BX24. First question: Woods & LandPride both sell tillers for sub-compact tractors. Both are pricey. KingKutter sells a more modestly priced tiller. Is it worthwhile to buy the more expensive tillers or is the KingKutter tiller good enough? Second question: Can my BX24 handle a tiller of the types sold for sub-compacts and do an adequate job in the garden? I would appreciate any opinions.

Your BX should handle a tiller just fine. King Kutter makes a decent tiller, from what I read here, although it's a bit rough and ready regarding paint, welds, etc., compared to some of the higher price point brands. The better made tillers for this size tractor (36-48") will weigh 400 lbs and up. Many of the tillers come from Italy for some reason. There are also some light-duty tillers that are not built as heavy, lacking the extra weight means they might not dig into hard ground as well.

I use a KK and absolutely love it. It's gear driven and weighs plenty. It did a fantastic job. I spoke with a dealer regarding the tiller and they also sold a reverse rotation tiller. He advised against it and I am glad he did. He saved me $200.

I just sold a 36" Kubota tiller that I'd used on different BX tractors with no problem. As with any implement there is usually a reason for big differences in price. My usual rule of thumb is, if I'm going to use it alot get the heaviest one available that I can afford after price shopping all implements in that weight range. If I'm only going to use it a few times then I may buy a mid priced one and plan for a resale after the job. If I'm only buying one to shine, look good and show people and NEVER resale I buy the lightest and cheapesti one I can find. I tell people to do the same thing with tools and also practice what I preach with tools which I rarely sell.

I have a 40" Bush Hog brand tiller that I run on a BX22 and the tractor handles it just fine. I made some wings that bolt to the back of the tiller that throw up a nice row if you dont like planting flat.

I have the standard sized TSC-branded-KK 48" tiller on my BX. The reason I don't go with ANY XB attachments is 1) Standard size fits and works just fine 2) If I ever upgrade to a larger tractor, I don't want to re-buy all my attachments.

btw, the KK 48" tiller is a beast. The paint was a little soft at first but I bought a can of Cat yellow and repainted where needed. It goes on soft then hardens like rock after the solvent gas out. Also have a 48" KK rotary cutter and KK Carry-all. Welds are good, paint is good (enough), products are great. No problems here ever.

I cut about 3" or less off the PTO shafts, just make sure that the shaft doesn't bind when the implement is lifted to the top position. And then cut to that length.

Hope this helps your decision. Orange (XB implements) isn't always better in this case.

I have a land pride 48" top of the line tiller you can get for the bx. It works fine. It cost an arm and a leg and I should have probably bought a tsc model of the same size because I don't use it all that much.
