Woods was the first that I am aware of that had left and right blades. Often multi spindle mowers and rotary cutters use both right and left blades because the spindles rotate in opposite directions. Yes they are timed by the gearbox and shaft between the gearboxes. Even some garden tractor mowers use right and left blades and are driven by a belt. The one I am familiar with is Simplicity.
