Terry, not talking about the little flat bar, talking about the top link!

I'm not sure which of my messages you are responding to but it doesn't matter. I've already addressed that point too. See message #42.

I use a chain for the top link due to severe slopes I mow with no issues. But, I ride a motorcycle with no helmet so I guess I'm kind of a rebel....

Has anyone looked at the geometry of how a rotary cutter would pivot and "hit" the operator? Seems to me that the ROPS would catch the wheel assembly if not the entire mower deck and prevent injury. It would sure be exciting and would virtually insure a need for new tighty whities but I'm thinking the operator's noggin would remain protected.

Yes.

,,, Im certainly not going to experiment with the variables to identify where they turn tragic. There are too many variables in tractors and bushog top profiles to know how close you could come by hitting something just right at 4mph with flip unrestrained.

The idea of the deck moving "backward" at 6 ft/sec rotating around the pins is not appealing. That kind of a kick, acting for ~ 6 inches would probably be enuf.

I still don't see it happening. First off the force needed numbers are way high. Second as long as the pto shaft is proper length then it would bottom out before it would allow the hog to hit the operator. Even if it's not the proper length then it would bind and not allow the hog to come up my more.

I know it could break but that would take energy away from the flip.

I agree with your thoughts but even if the thing did manage to flip, on a modern tractor the ROPS should provide yet another reason that injury to the operator is highly unlikely.
