I'm in need of help! I have a Howse 5' bush hog, the pto shaft broke and needs replaced. The gear box shaft is smooth with a shear bolt. I have removed the bolt and also a c shaped spring clip from the end of the shaft. The end of the pto shaft attached to the rotary cutter gear box shaft now moves freely around it and back & forth, but it will not come off. I have tried everything including a come-along and a hammer. There is a small hole in the end of the gear box shaft but I was told that this has nothing to do with what I am trying to do. Has someone experienced this problem or can someone please suggest what I should do. I'm in a jam as until I replace the pto shaft the cutter is useless. Thanks in advance for any/all advice and suggestions.

From your description it should slide off... Is there a paint ridge or something like that that is stopping it?
Spray some lube on the shaft and continue...
Can you post a picture? There should not be anything else mechanical holding that shaft to the PTO drive. KennyV

Is it possible you pushed up a bur when the shear pin sheared? Also check for high spots further down the shaft and hit them with a file if you find any.

If all else fails apply a liberal amount of heat to the PTO shaft and get a big hammer... ;)

Good Luck,

And if that doesn't work, get a bigger hammer...I agree that it is probably a ridge caused by a broken shear pin.

And not that I should really suggest this; but if a bigger hammer doesn't work, chain the bush hog to a BIG tree, and then chain your drawbar to the PTO shaft.

This does work, but only if you have a heavy bush hog, to keep the deck from twisting. :)

Larry, i would not suggest heat, you will burn the seal in the gearbox. I certainly wouldnt suggest chaining it to a tree and pulling it with the tractor, good way to get hurt or tear something up. if all else fails, and apparently it has, disassemble the cross (looks like a u-joint) that ties the pto shaft to the gearbox. put a bearing splitter behind the yoke that is on the shaft of the gearbox and use a puller to remove the yoke. if you dont have the tools, or are uncomfortable with the procedure, any equipment, truck mechanic or local machine shop should be able to help. Much better to do it right than to make matters much worse.

Last I saw him, he had a chain and was heading out to the tree....

get a micrometer.. slide the pto yoke toward the gearbox.. mic the end.. now slide the yoke toward the nd of the shaft and mic the back of the shaft.. compair OD of the gearbox shaft.. something may have deformed or mushroomed the end f the shaft preventing the yoke from slipping off. if so.. I'd suspect filing will be needed to reduce the OD.. that or slipping the old yoke and then removing the shaft and having it turned down proper and then replacing all the seals, bearings and yoke.. ( I'd file it if it was mushroomed.. )

save the heat and hammers.. it will damage the seal and bearing..
