I'm using a 72" Landpride RCR1872 for cutting and for ballast when using the FEL. I have a hydraulic top link. Question is, do you keep the weight on the cutter wheel when using for ballast or do you lift it and let it hang from the 3pt?

I have tried it both ways and prefer to leave the wheel off the ground so it doesn't bang around but I don't know if this is putting too much pressure on the 3pth and quick hitch.

Advice please.

Only one way it gonna work as ballast....

1872 isn't that heavy. Toplink cylinder is designed to withstand the abuse as is everything else. :2cents:

Excellent, thanks for the quick response. Just to be clear, you are saying it is okay to keep the wheel off the ground so that the full weight is used as ballast?

Doesn't all that extra length in the back irritate you trying to do loader work? Would bug me, but have somewhat tight spots in places.

As is typical here, I'll help spend YOUR money :) Have yo looked at the Titan (or similar brand) ballast boxes? Nice and compact way to add some extra weight and carry a little stuff like chains or tools too. But they're pretty inexpensive

Yes, its OK to lift the rotary cutter COMPLETELY off the ground for ballast. With the wheel on the ground the cutter represents a varying amount of ballast. Plus the rear wheel assembly could get damaged.

I have plenty of room and I am new to tractors so I have not been bothered by it yet. The Ballast box is on my wish list along with a grapple.

Good to know. Thank you all.

If I have the bush hog on I値l use it for ballast. I keep the wheel off the ground to get the most ballast.

Yes it is annoying to have that much length hanging off the back.... but sometimes you just have to work with what you have.
