So I just got a jd 4400 and realize the rops non folding is to tall to go in the side I store my tractor. I would love to trade someone if they are close to me, but haven't had any luck. I was wondering to those that have modified their rops if they could tell me what size of tubing is needed for the inside. I am thinking of putting a sleeve on the inside, would like to make it fold but I think a sleeve and pin to remove would be easier.

Take a look at a folding one at the dealer and see if you can copy it.

The John Deere dealer here sent their non folding rops to the welding shop to be modified to folding if the customer wanted it. They basically copied the folding version.

Thanks for the replies, I might check some local welders, I have found a used one for around 250 not shipped, I imagine I could get one fabbed up cheaper.

I agree with both posters above, better to copy a folding rops as it is easier to use than a pin and socket set up. Proper welding techniques are important though.

You can purchase real JD folding rops that will work . For less $ than cobbling up something home brew that is not qualified .

I agree with the not qualified, but less money I doubt that, a new rops for my tractor is over $1000. I have been looking on ebay but everything I look up on jd parts there are only 3 tractors with rops that will fit mine unless someone knows of more, I am all for keeping it factory but not for $1000. I even emailed a couple tractor junkyards 1 week ago and have heard nothing, figure the lease they could do is tell me they don't have anything at the moment if that is the reason for no response. I am open to ideas, I have looked through the forum at other modded rops.

I doubt you would fabricate a ROPS cheaper than $250...I'd go for the used one.

Another possibility is to just shorten your existing ROPS and leave it a non-folding type.

Patience and expanding your search... You'll find them at a good deal. Just may have to drive or get them shipped ...
