I see dozens of posts about root rakes/grapples with the hydraulically operated top pieces.

Who's using a root rake without the top-side clamping arms (thumbs)?

Strongly considering a 60" rake with 1" teeth from The Rake Shop.

I wasn't aware of that, thanks.

No problem. I missed the part where you asked who's using one. Didn't mean to recommend something other than the one you were interested in.
Thought i'd get that out there before I get called down!

Consider a <$900 Field Cultivator mounted on your Three Point Hitch, rather than a Root Rake.

Tractors, with their large rear wheels, are more effective PULLING, than PUSHING.

Field Cultivators are also excellent pasture aerators.

If you have a big area to do it might be worth renting on of these for a day or so.

I appreciate the advice but have already made the decision to buy a root rake. For the cost of getting a 100 hp dozer with a 10 ft., 6-way straight blade/root rake, I can buy my own.

I'm just asking who uses a root rake without hydraulics.

I was just trying to suggest another option. Not saying that is what you should do.

Around here you could rent a small dozer like mine (70 hp TD7 or a JD 450) for about $300 and get a ten hour day.

That is a home made rake but nobody named Sam made it. It is a close copy of a USA Attachment rake. Pretty popular.

I wasn't my intent to be snarky, apologies if it sounded that way, I really do appreciate all the input.

The rake on the dozer looks like one built at The Rake Shop in Florida, the proprietor there is named Sam; however, after looking around some I see what you mean, it's a pretty popular style.

Ahh - Now I understand who Sam is. If he builds them like that they are probably pretty good rakes.

Been watching LOTS of your videos, very interesting!

I built a 60" wide one for my machine and hated it both with and without the removable top grapple. I wasn't digging out roots with it only trying to pickup loose brush on the top and firewood logs. 60" (same as my standard bucket) was just too wide, 48" probably would have been better. Sold it and have plans for a new one with a very different design.

I've been back and forth on what size to get, you, IslandTractor and some others say 48" is best. The argument that a wider one can save front tires seems to make sense! What do you think about the tire thing?
