Well, it's labor day weekend....so just like most of us here at TBN, I am laboring on a project. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I am re-roofing a section of the house, and I am not sure if I should replace the roof sheathing boards, or just put new OSB on top of the existing boards. Now that I have some of the shingles stripped, I can see that there is rot in some places on the boards. Simple question...should I remove all the old boards down to the rafters, or just put the OSB on top and call it good?

Thanks,
Dave

I would not simply put new sheathing on top of old. I'd either cut out the rotted wood and replace (if the rotted area is small enough) or replace the entire section of sheathing.

Dave, I'm no roofing expert, but I've done a little bit of that kind of work. It's been my experience that once rot starts, it continues to spread. I probably would not replace all the decking, but I'd sure cut out any rotted areas and replace them with new boards. Of course, that's guessing from what I can see of in the picture. It appears to me that much of the decking is still solid.
