Rolled the dice on a DK40

Lot worse than what? What is it you think is the problem? What are you going to open up?

Worse than just the rings. i'm going to do a compression test and then drop the pan and pull the head pending what I find. Valves look ok. it starts up but won't idle unless i'm flooring it with fuel and even then it's blowing white smoke and oil and knocking like crazy. There's also a ticking now and bearing metal on the dipstick.
