I found something interesting and frankly, IMO, it makes
my suggested surface connection look twice as strong as
what I see HERE
There are 26 different full size racing cages and I believe every one of
them attaches to the vehicle w/ a 4' x 4" .25" thick plate!
That is exactly what I am doing only I add an interior plug for
more shear strength.

Here is just one of the 26, and everyone and their brother
is doing it this way.

For what is worth, I have built several roll cages over the years mainly for race trucks. I have always used .095 tubing and have butt welded my A & B post to tubing off the chassis.

I have had mine and seen many others of the same basic design put to the ultimate test and I have never seen a post butt weld fail. On a roll cage all your X bracing and support links tie the cage together an spread the impact across the entire cage.

I think you will be fine butt welding you post.
