Ring gear failure

HI Guys, Nearly a year ago we had problems starting the JD 5425 while changing the starter motor we discovered some of the teeth on the ring gear were chewed up. So we have been blindly turning the fan and belt by hand in hopes of alining some good teeth with the starter motor, which has worked well for several months. However now we cannot get it started at all. All we get is hum, from the starter motor, I guess. So does that mean that even more teeth are chewed up and we have to have John Deere tear it apart and replace the ring gear, at a cost of about $4,000?
Any other suggestions or ideas?

That tractor (even if it's 4WD) is not very hard to split. John Deere shops (at $100+/hr) aren't the the only people capable. Look/ask around for someone local. I've had a number of 5000 series tractors apart and can have one apart in one afternoon. (once the loader and support frames are off) In fact I once did a clutch job on a 2WD tractor in one day. New clutch, pressure plate, bearings, ETC. It's not that hard.

Ok, thanks for the input. I tried to start it again today and it wouldn't turn over. Battery was at 12. 6 volts. Starter tried to engage the flywheel I think not sure what that means???

I think it means you need to remove the starter again and take another look at the gear teeth. Both starter and ring gear.

Might be some "lost teeth" are causing a bind?

That means you have either worn out your starter gear or your temporary fix isnt working any more.

I did a ring gear in a 34yr old, 19hp kubota..it was $220 in parts.
