Being new to country living I didn't know how to get hard water deposits off of toilet bowl with out damage to surface. Nothing worked and it just got worse. Finally put in softner but rings still there. Had a real hard water expert (retired aircraft carrier captain) visiting and he told me answer. PUMICE - works great. Not found in any stores I frequent, finally found pumice sticks on ebay. Bought two which turns out to a lifetime plus supply. Cheep and effective!

There is a product called WINK.....find it at Walmart in our area. It is in the area that has cleaning supplies and comes in a brown bottle. Look hard cause it is usually buried down at the bottom racks.

CLR has worked for me. You can also try muratic acid or vinegar. I hope the pumice don't remove the glaze from your fixture.

I have used the pumice sticks also, found them in an industrial cleaning supply store. Worked great and finish seems fine.

I've found pumice sticks in the local stores. Seems like they were in the health section for removing stuff from your feet.

Put a can of real Coke-a-Cola in her, make sure the water level it just above the ring, then the next morning clean
as normal. The Coke will dissolve the ring in most cases. Also there is a product called Iron Out that will clean out
Iron deposits in everything you have that uses water.

We use the Iron out in our Washing Machine, Water Softener, Dishwasher, and Toilets.

On/Off Boat Hull Cleaner. Make sure you use glasses and gloves!

Good Afternoon Larry,
I agree 100% CLR is my first choice and what I used before I got a filtration system ! I would also be very careful with the pumice on the porcelain finish !

If you're in a rural area, I'm guessing whatever goes in your drain goes in your private septic system and not a public waste treatment system. There are some cleaning chemicals that kill the bacteria that a septic system needs in order to process waste. Besides cleaning effectiveness, there may need to be some discussion whether the cleaner can harm your septic system. If I am taking us down the wrong path, I apologize, but I thought I should bring this up as a possible consideration for discussion.

I'd second the Iron Out. I just shake a little of the powder into the toilets for rust stains and they are shiny white right to the top of the water level with no scrubbing. This stuff is powerful - don't get it on any chrome fixtures, as it will mar the surface.

I'm a lucky man.:):):)

My well is totally untreated and I have perfectly soft water. Deposits never appear in fixtures, and even soap deposits around the bottom of my shower disappear with a light spray of purple cleaner, one light rub, and a quick rinse. I truly feel blessed to have such good luck with our water.

Me too. Bacon grease washes off your hands with plain cool water too.

I saw on one of those "fixer-upper" shows where the guy used 600 grit sandpaper. Ultra fine grit, he put on some rubber gloves and started lightly sanding it (water still in the bowl). It came out perfectly clean. He also noted that it wouldn't hurt the porcelain.

So, I had a little ring on my toilets in the house I sold a few years back. I did the same thing he did and it works! You couldn't tell I had applied sandpaper.

What I want to know is how does a Navy Captain know anything about cleaning toilets?
