I have neighbor that always calls me when she wants to do a new project. Latest one on the drawing board is a cover for her riding arena. 100' by 200'. She wants to do it on a "budget". I am looking for suggestions for the roof structure. The structure would be on the SE Texas coast with frequent high winds, some times hurricanes and this year lots of rain. About 72 inches since October. Thanks in advance.

Chicken houses are built as cheaply as possible. I would copy their design, or buy an old one and use the trusses. Just look for the biggest one out there and base your design around what's available.

The fabric coverall type buildings would most likely be the best bet,
especially if the cover was removed prior to a hurricane and reinstalled after.

It could be installed on piers or a post and beam wall for maximum ventilation in the summer,
and with rollup side curtains for colder weather.
But it will need to be a good sized budget.

Steel structure. Does she give lessons?

An 'open-sided' hay shed would do the trick. Aluminium or steel supports with a colorbond roof. Think of a big "pole barn" without the sides.

A series of farm-gates to enclose it with double gates at each end to allow entry/exit for the horses and for the tractor to maintain the surface.

Ok ok ok I caved and did an internet search for 100’ clear span truss. Here is one option. It will be interesting to see transporting something 100’ long.

Years ago my aunt had 3 Tyson barns on her property. Thanks!

What ever came of this? Cost wise..

Maybe the best budget idea is a huge tarp on one end on a roller to pull out when rain is coming..keep the arena dry. Then after rain roll it up and ride.. they have huge tarps for sport fields. Not sure how much an issue it would be sitting inside taking up room at one end of the arena..

Just would need to hold it down well..maybe park on top of it?? Something super heavy..

The wife paid $295,000 for (her) 120x200x26 arena. Has a 120 mph wind rating and 60 psf snow load. Nothing cheap about an arena.

24,000 feet of covered riding... that must have been quite a project... just under a $1.25 a square foot.
