Rich\'s House AKA Wampecack Creek Farm

/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif By popular demand, (thanks Cindi, Bob and Paul) I'm starting this thread on our house construction and improvements to our farm. I don't yet have construction pictures, but I'll post before pictures, and hopefully this week I'll get some construction shots.

First, this is our house, before renovations. The extension on the right side of the picture has already been removed, and is being replaced by a larger extension that will be similar to the old extension the house once had.

Our research indicates that our house was built sometime between 1770 and 1780.

We will also be removing the cheesey blue siding and exposing the original clapboards that are still underneath, replacing the ones that are rotted.

Also, the house only now has one chimney. It originally had two, but we won't be replacing that for quite a while.

This is a shot of our barns. The larger one is our horse and goat barn. It was originally a dairy barn, it also is about 200 years old.

The smaller barn was once a carriage house, and had been converted to a garage long ago. We use it to store our smaller tractor (Ferguson TO-20) and other farm equipment. But our bigger tractor (Oliver 1550) is too tall for it, so we are putting an extension on the back of it, which is the part you see.

In order to get the work done, we had to have a bulldozer and an excavator dig the foundation. So...our bridge, which was severely rotted had to be repaired, and the driveway, which always became rutted by the rain had to be regraded.

This is our front driveway, with the bridge, before the work.

Well, the excavator said that the front driveway was too small to handle the bulldozer, so we had to regrade the back driveway, which was a muddy mess. Actually we wanted to do that anyway.

Here's the backdriveway, before the work.

I love it. You are so lucky to be up north where you can find old houses like that. Whatever you do, don't get discouraged by the dirt and the dust and the tire tracks all over the place and the lumber and the messed up grass from the trucks, you may not be at that point yet, but keep the vision. It'll all come together. The one thing about houses is that there is always something to do and you may never feel done, but before you know it, it'll be home sweet home, pretty much the way you want it.

Rah rah sis boom bah.. cheer over!

SWEEt....Thats a great place. The closest thing near me is my one neighbor MR Moody he's been up here on the MTN since 1923.....I think he built his house himself so at least we have a lil history. other than that we have Horse-pens 40 and the old grit mill in Springville,Al (aka Homestead Hollow) thats been around I think since at least the end of the CIVIL WAR or there close abouts.(by the way can anybody tell me what was so civil about it?).
SO yeah it's really great to see folks keeping the old farmsteads up and around.

Maybe in a couple hundred yrs our folks or at least some body will be keeping up our lil place... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Rich\'s House AKA Wampecack Creek Farm

Rich -- What a lovely homestead! Tamara and I both envy you your barns! Unfortunately, most of our land is steep and forested. Worse, there aren't many places we could build a barn that wouldn't potentially interfere with our spring. So I guess we're limited to the smaller, stick construction sort of pseudo-barn
