Return unused Echo and buy from a better dealer?

A close friend of mine bought a new Echo CS450 (I think). He had it a few months and said it ran for crap, took it to the dealer and the dealer said there was nothing wrong with it. He was sure there was so I told him to replace the gas and if no joy then how to adjust the carb. by removing and replacing the limiters.

It is not very easy if you have never done it so he left it and just complained. I told him to get some canned gas just to alleviate gas as a problem. He ripped me and said the gas is good, so I just backed away from the problem. He did complain for another year about how inadequate the little saw was and I just agreed with him. He finally said he got the saw running good now and he was happy. I asked what the fix was, he said gas. He got a gallon of canned gas and it ran great.

To the OP: I would definitely get a can of gas at least for the first 3-4 tanks just so you know how it is supposed to run and sound. Then switch to mixing if you want.

Why return it if you're just going to purchase the same saw from someone else? If and when it needs service, take it to a different repair shop/dealer that you're more comfortable with.

I agree with Moss.

And nothing at all wrong with admitting you are not mechanically inclined.

I’ve read through the entire thread thus far and could be completely misinterpreting your situation and if so i apologize. Looks to me more of a case of hurt feelings and reminds me why the good retailers I’ve known burn out early.

That is simply not true. Yes, there are more pros in my area using Stihl and Husqvarna saw than other brands, but Echo has a significant following. They make decent saws at good prices.

My Echo saw dealer did not grease the nose and it seized up on my first cutting trials. Got it unstuck.

I have not greased the nose on the bar on any chainsaw I have owned in the past 15-20 years. The only time I've lost a tip is when it got crushed when I misread the tension on a tree when cleaning up some storm damage. Some very well thought of bars don't even have a hole to grease them. The trick with this is either grease them regularly or don't grease them at all. Once you start greasing a bar, you have to keep greasing it: the grease attracts and holds dirt and grit. Pushing in new grease flushes the crud out.

Well, all I can say, is it seized up.

The dealer I got my Echo from sells Stihl and was selling Husky to Government. Now, some government is going over to Echo. I have heard that Stihl has terrible warranty policies. Some companies think they are Gods gift to the world and will find out otherwise. Just like many thought, the Chinese could never be a threat.

Curious what you consider a professional? Where I live, trees are trimmed and cut down with chainsaws by guys using a variety of saws, but from what I've seen, usually Stihl or Echo. I've never seen any other brand used by any of them. Every one of them will show up to a job with half a dozen different chainsaws. I was working on a house last week where a friend and his tree trimming company showed up across the street. They had two guys in the trees, both using Echo saws, and 4 guys on the ground getting the branches, and later on the rounds, and either running them through the chipper, or loading the rounds onto a trailer.

The big logging companies do not use chainsaws. They use very large, very heavy, and very expensive machines to take them down and haul them out.

Have you ever used an Echo? I have 3 Stihl chainsaws, but started out with Husqvarna. I'll never own anything Husqvarna again, but after discovering Echo, that's all I will buy in the future. More power for less money that starts easier compared to my Stihl saws.

I would feel the same way as you. Even though he told you the truth, he could have taken 5 minutes to show you and make nice. That's how you earn customers.

So, now you learned a lesson and can save money at HD or buy from a nicer dealer instead buying from him again.

Haha as for the guys that have opined on brand, come on. Im not going there. Ford vs chevy vs dodge vs toyoder. Everyone has their own experiences.

How much of my arms and shoulders have been used up pulling on no-starting Stihl equipment? Better, yet, starts, dies and won't start again.
