Would like to get suggestions for nice retirement areas in southwest VA, East TN, SouthEast WV. Actually want 25-50+ acres in the country with or without a house, but buildable. Let me know why you like the area you suggest. Thanks.

i live in Floyd Co. VA which is in the area you speak of. Been here for 18 years after moving from Long Island, NY. I don't know where my house key is because we never lock the doors. The terrain is green and rolling. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. There's not much in the way of local jobs but retirees aren't looking for employment. There are no zoning regulations.
Come back with questions if you'd like.

You can't beat the area around Lexington, VA and Rock Bridge Baths. College town with good facilities, and reasonable real estate prices.

The entire stretch of E TN (N to S) is pretty good exc the areas around Knoxville and Chattanooga. It would help if you could give some specifics. If its just land youre interested in theres plenty of that but some would be less expensive to build on than others. I should mention that taxes a pretty low relative to neighboring states. There are other advantages too depending on what you value.

I haven't checked out floyd county yet but would like to know more. It looks to be off the beaten path, but yet not too far from things, plus being along the blue ridge pkwy is nice.
I have checked out highland and bath counties a little further north.
Lately have been checking out Carroll and grayson co area. I will be down there in july checking some more, if anyone from there could give suggestions.
In east TN i probably want up in the corner near Johnson city over to boone.

thanks, keep em coming.

Somewhere near Bristol, on the TN side. No income tax, and VA has much lower sales tax. Kinda like livin' in Vancouver WA and shoppin' in Portland.

I found the area around Greenville, TN to be nice and relaxed. Quiet little town about 10 miles from the interstate. About 40 miles from the VA state line.

Mornin Buckeyfarmer,
I have never lived in that area but have been down to Bristol, Tn for the race a couple of times and was very impressed with the country side around the Bristol area. Really beautiful countryside IMHO !

Check out Craig County. The county is mostly National Forest, but it is still close enough to the City when you need something. A.K.A. there are several tractor dealers!

On the Tennessee side, if you're looking for more scenic, moutainous areas look in Sullivan, Carter and Unicoi counties. They're generally east of the Tri-Cities (Bristol, Kingsport & Johnson City) between there and the North Carolina border. A lot of Forest Service land in those areas, but beautiful Appalachian countryside. If you're willing to get out a bit farther off the beaten track, you can find relatively inexpensive land west of the Tri-Cities in Hawkins and Hancock counties, up on the Virginia border. Still mountainous, but more just "big hills" as opposed to those of the Smokies and Blue Ridge.
