Rob, I don't know whether it applies to other implements or not, but both manuals for my Bush Hog RTS40 tiller and RDTH60 finish mower call for a minimum overlap of 6 inches. Of course, that's the minimum, and like John, I'd prefer more.

BX1800 and 40" Woods tiller

I just tried out my new Woods 40 inch tiller with my BX1800... And I agree -- there is no problem with power!! In fact, I told my wife that the combination is "a proper toy!"...

The first day I just cut down a couple of inches to skin the sod -- no problem. So the second day I set it to maximum depth and went slow... breaking sod on the new ground as well as digging all the way down... No problem... "a proper toy!"
