Replacing Power Steering Unit on 5010 / 2555

I thought a new thread might be in order. Much info about leaking fluid and oil seal repair on the other thread
Orbitrol valve cost : $1140. Remove steering wheel using puller with bearing puller adapter. Cost $50 from Lowes. Option: drill holes in SW hub to avoid adapter collar. Mark hoses R, P, T, L based on legend on bottom of PSU. Loosen hose connections. Will help to remove as much hardware as possible to lessen fight. 3/4" for hose connector. 11/16" for nut at bottom of PSU. More to follow

I traced out hoses. My mistake was thinking R is right and L was left. Diagram looks that way but hoses cross if you look closely. There is also a set of fittings shown (M-F for R and F-M for L. R port connects near left wheel; L port near right wheel. I think i'll buy a M-M and F-F fitting. That will be a lot easier than getting back underneath/behind PSU again. Good grief!

According to Oreillys the adapters I want may be hard to find. They cant get metric fitting to make a very short hose. I'm thinking just swap the hoses at the PSU. Remove pins held by short bolts from which the bracket swivels. May have to pull one of the hoses back and push through other side of hose bundle but ive done that already. Having to do that should have been a hint that everything wasnt right.

Let me see if I'm understanding. You're saying that you traced the left/right steering hoses down to the front axle and it appears that the hoses at the HSU are the opposite way? Did you mark the hoses/connections prior to removing from old HSU? If so and you connected L-L ; R-R; T-T (return line) & P-P (pressure) you should be good to go. If your OEM unit was a "-01" and the new unit "-02", the bottom of the new one may have a slightly different hose arrangement (left/right etc.). I never saw my OEM as it changed out by the dealer.

They maybe hard to find, even at a hydraulic shop as these hose fittings/connections on Mahindra/TYM are BS........................British Standard.

Is that the new HSU mounted? From what I can see, it looks like it's connected right. If after you get it all put back together, started and you turn the steering wheel left and it turns right, do this (see diagram) swap the connections left to right on the steering cylinder! It's lot easer than tracking down m-f & f-m adapters or tearing your dash etc. all apart again (until you have to repair/replace HSU again)

Okay. The two hoses run down right center then longer one crosses over to left side. Don't think shorter one reach there. Could run it down left center but that may be more trouble than changing at PSU base

I marked hoses but was somewhat relying on memory. When I had trouble getting last hose to fit up I convinced myself I had it wrong. Think long- think wrong. So I traced out hoses and messed up. Drove tractor. Not fun to steer. Only need to swap top right and bottom left looking from top. Middle one is hardest. Can't do it last so I'm glad it's good

The reason it looks right is because I pulled top right hose out from left side and back in on right side of bundle

Congrats on your install, now you know what's involved so the next time you have to change it out, it'll be a breeze! Oh and when I did my first one, I used colored paint pens and marked the hoses and the corresponding fittings on the HSU (very short memory........just ask my wife!)

Went out between rain storms and looked at the hoses on front axle........... you're right, one is shorter! . . . . . . it was a thought.

A good idea actually. Steering came off easily. I had just hand tightened big nut and put anti seize on it. Knew what wrenches to use. Darker in the barn *chicken house* so I'm stringing lights. I've got 120vac at the other end 250 feet away. Total drop from fuse box is almost 600 feet but I have an auto transformer. No big deal for lights but motors pull more current at lower voltage
