1973 Massey Ferguson 135 Diesel
I have recently taken over the care of my Grandfather's 1973 MF 135 Deluxe diesel that I will eventually inherit. Among other tasks (new wiring harnesses, new radiator, new thermostat, 10DN to 10SI alternator conversion, new valve cover gasket and general degunking all over), I am replacing the fuel lift pump because the manual lever on the old one was broken off.

I finally managed to get the fuel lines removed from the old lift pump as the old grommets had hardened, and was wondering if anybody had any advice/tricks for installing the new grommets onto the fuel lines and into the new fuel lift pump (also removing old grommets)? Do you push the new grommet over the flare on the fuel line then install the grommet/fuel line or do you install the grommet into the pump and then push the fuel line into it?

Thanks

Brian

Removing the old hardened sleeves is always fun. I use a small pick and break it up inside the nut, removing a piece at at ime as it breaks. Once cleaned out, push the new sleeve over the flare, then pull the nut over it. You should then be able to start the nut onto the pump fitting.

find a screwdriver that just fits the id of the old grommet and "screw" it out. Works sometimes, your mileage may very

G'day BSAggie.
There are two types of seal ,one is thick and the other is thin you want to buy the thick ones ,they just push into the pump and the pipe with the tube flare on the end butts up to it .

Do not overtighten the nuts it does not take a lot to seal the pipe ,so just tight and check, if it leaks give it another wee bit just enough so it does not leak ,the seals are not meant to fit over the pipe if you find that it was hard to get the pipes out of the pump it means that the nuts were overtightened and forced the rubber seals over the pipe.
Happy days.
Hutch.
