I have an '07 BX2350 that I picked up with only 256 hours on it and the boots were already hosed. After seeing this thread I decided to just live with the bad boots until I had to replace the tie rod ends. I dreaded attempting to endure the aggravation of replacing the wound spring piece (hint: use a piece of string).
I found some alternatives while searching for something else on eBay. One uses a unique Teflon washer and an "E" clip while the other uses cable ties to secure the boot in place. Both options supply a much thicker and more durable boot.
I finally opted for the Teflon washer and an "E" Clip Version after seeing a Paul Short video. It cost me $28 to do both sides (now only $26).
The Cable Tie Version cost a bit less at $20. Here's an R&R video of it.
I'll add pictures later.
