We live in an older raised foundation home built in 1914, lightly remodeled before we bought it in 1999, re-piped but left the 23" high step over clawfoot tub/shower in place. We are in our late seventies and becoming ever more fearful of stepping in/out over that tub's high wall.
Your thoughts please on installing a walk in gasketed door tub and shower or just a small step over shower. Curtains or glass door?

On my list of upcoming projects, probably next winter. Ripping out a std 60" tub unit and installing a 60" shower base in it's location with a mid length 1/2 wall glass top and glass door and backing for hand rails. Glass will be from a local shop and will be substantial. As long as you have std tub dimensions available there are a lot of options.

I just don't get the gasketed door walk in tubs that are all the rage. Do you really want to sit there naked and shivering till all the water drains out so you can open the door? I'd put in a low step over shower large enough for a bench, chair or a care giver.

we like glass doors - easier to clean than curtains.

I've heard they drain very fast.

Funny you'd bring this up. There's a thread about it here in TBN right now. Very good reading about installing a walk-in tub for an elderly parent. Lots of good stuff in there. I suggest you read it. It may help your decision making.

I don't mind stewing in my own juices. At times, a good, long, hot soak is very relaxing and beneficial for relieving aches and pains. I rinse off under the shower when I'm done soaking.

After all that...I think Hot Tubs are Gross.

2 minutes and 15 seconds to drain according to the OP in that thread I put a link to. That's great considering the amount of water.

Handrails will make a huge difference with the tub you have.

By golly you're just doing all right. I know much younger people that can't sit/stand in a bathtub.

My mom has a walk-in shower with no lip, just 3 walls and no curtain or door and lots of hand rails. She likes it.
