I'm still puzzled. Just reversing the curl/dump hoses (the same way on both sides) should have just reversed the way the joystick worked, right?

I'd have thought so too. Maybe detaching hoses allowed an air block to escape? I'm a bottomless pit of ignorance on this stuff.

My friend does professional landscaping and maintains mowers and tractors as part of his job. He led the charge on initially replacing these hoses and reconnected them in the first place. When I told him last night what was going on he offered to come by this afternoon, but checked on how the hoses on a similar tractor were configured before coming. The minute he walked into my barn he said, "I see whats wrong. Hoses are flipped."

Only way this makes sense is if his control valve has the regenerative dump feature for the default position. Then when you dump pressure is common to both cylinder ports so the cylinder extends. In curl mode pressure should be directed to rod end of the cylinders but with the hose switched it was directed to the cap end so bucket dumps.

As I recall, when I first attempted to operate the bucket I though it was operating weirdly...like it was doing the opposite of what I wanted it to do.

Lesson learned (again) is that when you are disassembling an unfamiliar device either take notes or take photos. I knew better.

Glad you have this issue resolved and good information for the next person that swaps the lines.

Glad you got it fixed.

Im late to the party but the whole time reading through the 5 pages I was thinking regen valve and hoses swapped. But it wasnt mentioned til page 3 or 4 and turns out that was the issue.

It doesnt matter what or how hoses are hooked up. Regen pressurizes BOTH hoses. And due to piston area difference between rod and base end, when you pressurize BOTH lines (regen) the cylinder will ALWAYS extend (dump)

The issue was with roll back. With the hoses swapped, and you tried to curl back, it was only pressurizing the base-end hose which ALSO makes cylinder extend.

So with them incorrectly hooked up.....if you try to curl.....it dumps instead. And if you try dump.....it still dumps because thats regen.

For the record...much of the discussion was under the guise that the hoses were replaced correctly...

Guise in this context could be substituted for assumption.....and we all know what that means;)

You missed the point entirely...

Not sure what point I missed.

Everyone ASSUMED he put the hoses back on correctly.

The bucket was full dump. And wouldnt do anything. Hoses being backwards on a regen valve....thats exactaly what would happen. And had I been earlier to the thread, I would have asked to see pics of where the hardlines go to the valve (to confirm that the hoses were wrong), or would have suggested swapping them trying. I wouldnt have automatically assumed he re-installed the hoses right.

All this just shows how little I know about hydraulics in general and "regen" specifically!
