My elderly dad left me his cub RZT50 with a 24hp B&S Intek V twin engine. He did not take very good care of it. It wasn't winterized (during Texas snowmaggedon at that) and when I went to check it out (after sitting in my dusty indoor arena for the last 6 months), the oil filter was lose and soaked all the built up grass around the engine in oil
.
After cleaning it all up, I did all the normal service including new spark plugs. There wasn't a lot of gas in it so I mixed up some new gas with "mechanic in a bottle" (MIB) and filled. It started, and smoked a bit and then I mowed a few hours. A day or two later it was giving me trouble, so I topped it off with the mixed gas and jacked up the front end (parked with FE on slight down-hill slope). It started and ran fine for another few hours of mowing.
A week later I tried the same thing, but store was out of MIB so I tried Seafoam High Milage motor treatment. It wouldn't start. Ive never cleaned a carb before and didn't want to spend the time when a new one was $40 next day (I have very little experience working on gas engines). I replaced it yesterday and tried to start it. It still wouldn't start and now the low oil light was on. I checked it, and it was on the low end of normal, so I added a little more and still the same thing. There are no leaks that I can find.
Now what? Did I knock something lose? Does the transmission need to be engaged for it to start? (I disengaged it to tow it).
