My elderly dad left me his cub RZT50 with a 24hp B&S Intek V twin engine. He did not take very good care of it. It wasn't winterized (during Texas snowmaggedon at that) and when I went to check it out (after sitting in my dusty indoor arena for the last 6 months), the oil filter was lose and soaked all the built up grass around the engine in oil .

After cleaning it all up, I did all the normal service including new spark plugs. There wasn't a lot of gas in it so I mixed up some new gas with "mechanic in a bottle" (MIB) and filled. It started, and smoked a bit and then I mowed a few hours. A day or two later it was giving me trouble, so I topped it off with the mixed gas and jacked up the front end (parked with FE on slight down-hill slope). It started and ran fine for another few hours of mowing.

A week later I tried the same thing, but store was out of MIB so I tried Seafoam High Milage motor treatment. It wouldn't start. Ive never cleaned a carb before and didn't want to spend the time when a new one was $40 next day (I have very little experience working on gas engines). I replaced it yesterday and tried to start it. It still wouldn't start and now the low oil light was on. I checked it, and it was on the low end of normal, so I added a little more and still the same thing. There are no leaks that I can find.

Now what? Did I knock something lose? Does the transmission need to be engaged for it to start? (I disengaged it to tow it).

Since you mentioned it - the low oil sensor may not allow it to start if it thinks it is low as an engine protection measure (possibly). You might need to jumper it or something to see if that does it. If it starts then either you are low on oil or the sensor is bad.

Dumb question but is there some on/off electrical switch that you need to flip on and forgot about?
Are you getting spark?
Are you getting fuel flow?

Verify that the little solenoid below the carb has the wire connector is attached and "clicks" when the ignition is switched on. Keep the OEM carb. You may not have gotten a bargain w/ the $40 version...

Yes, that little fuel shutoff solenoid could be the culpret.... any dirt in there and they clog up. Easy fix, unscrew the whole module from under the carb. The little piston / needle tip should be able to pull out of the housing. Clean it up (I used 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper), also clean inside the housing sleeve. That piston needs to move freely In and out. You will definitely hear a "click" if it is operating properly

take the cover off there is a wheel with fins on it it also has
a magnet on it if it is rusted you need to clean it up so its
nice and shinny and the coil it looks like a horse shoe with
wire would around the middle take this off and clean up the edges
that are close to the magnet. This will insure that you are getting
spark. If you don't know the gap to put the coil back on get some
book matches and use the cover to get the correct gap. Just
put the coil on and turn the wheel so the magnets are contacting
the coil put the match book cover in between the two and tighten
the coil and you should be good to go.

This guy was walking down the street and was looking around and seen this ladder ;on the side of this
house he looks up and sees a blonde standing on it with 2 great big heavy overcoats on. He walks over
by the ladder looks up and says excuse me mam I'm not trying to be facetious or anything but why do
you have 2 great big heavy overcoats on when the temp is like 104 degrees?? the blonde looks down
and says just following directions she holds up the paint pail and says see right here is says put on 2 coats
