Time for farming to move back east, I guess.

Sorry to hear about your weather problems, Richard. We've got the same problems here in upstate New York. I've been wanting to do my very first hay cutting for two weeks, but it's been raining like crazy. Now for the last few days, they predicted rain, and it's been beautiful. This weekend would be perfect, but we have relatives staying with us that we promised to show the area to. I hope next week will work. After having a long drought, I can't believe now I'm praying for NO RAIN!!!

Yea it's a real bummer Rich. Be careful on waiting too long for that hay Rich. If it's alfalfa and it blooms you will get very slow growth after you get it. Same with the grass hay. If it heads out before you cut it it will be slower growing and you lose alot of the nutrient value, especially the protein. That's the problem with farming when the crops are ready the crops are ready and you have to go.

I'd like to know what their yields are hayden. I'm sure they are alot less or the rent wouldn't be so low. Average corn yield here is around 200 bushel an acre.

Richard, all my hay is grass. But even so, if I can't cut it soon, I may have to brush hog it all, and pray that the second cutting has better weather. I knew I'd have to find a window of good weather, but I never thought the weather would be so uncooperative for so long!/w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif

We've had 2 rain free days. Still, though, with the amount of rain we had (in excess of 5" last week) the fields are too wet to support equipment. By the time they dry out enough, the hay won't be worth much. My previous post mentioning the price of a square bale will probably need to be edited.

All - Thanks for the input, I guess I'll just live with the status quo, $15-$30/acre is not worth bothering with. He's a good neighbor and would do anything for you and VV. Thanks again!
