I've been thinking again... yeah, sometimes I surprise myself too...

I'm too old and lack the energy or the inclination to start a new business, but perhaps it's something some of you younger fellows, especially those that have lost their jobs might want to consider. What are the collective thoughts about starting a farm equipment rental business?

There are rental companies everywhere but, to my knowledge, none that specialize in farm equipment. If I were younger and inclined, I believe I'd look into this possibility.... Is there a hole in this picture somewhere, or an opportunity?

I called on a JohnDeere tractor I saw for sell on tractor house. The salesman said they had rented it out for the summer because a farmer needed a extra tractor. He said I could look at it in about 3 months. Maybe this is something alot of dealers will do?

I'm not surprised that tractors can be rented but I'm thinking tillers, bush hogs, landscape racks, etc... Just pondering in my spare time...

Equipment that everybody would not want all at the same time probably would be good rental. One rental shop here does some of that. Small planters for more like gardens might be good but I would stay away from the true farm units as the window on those is short, at least here. Equipment for food plots might also be good.

I have wondered why around me no one has a consignment lot for farm equipment. Then maybe have an auction once a month or quarter to keep inventory moving.

Tractor dealers around here rent out tractors and implements all the time to commercial farmers for short periods (3-6 months) and then advertise these rentals at reduced prices. You can find many rentals in AgSource magazine

I actually run a small tractor rental business on the side here in washington. You're not exactly going to get rich due to the big rental companies, but you can often compete here and there if you deliver and on the weekends..

Almost every town of 20k or more people around here has a rental place with skid steers, mini hoes, tractors and implements. Also IMO many farm equipment dealers will rent equipment (if asked)...but most of their customers like the convenience and economics of owning. I think the rental biz can be good....but it's pretty capital intensive to get started.
