I have a 4110 JD. With bucket. I am wanting to know what is the best way to remove the shubs that have been in the ground for over 25 years. {See photo of shubs} the base of the larger shub is 4 inchs. I only have the rear blade as counter wait. I hooked down low and raised the bucket and left wheel started to come off the ground. Will more wieght help to pull this out or should I use my 4 wheel drive truck and chain. Or get out my shovel.

Thanks for any help.

Roger

backhoe, or a shovel and a friend with a strong back. Those things are deep. We did that here, took a Toyota truck, shovel, deep hole and an axe to get them out.........that was before I had the bota. Now it would be EASY.

I've found that using a straight up FEL pull is pretty tough with a small tractor. What I've done is wrap a chain a few wraps around the trunk (if you can get to it), then ease into the trunk and raise as you push forward. Then reverse. This helps give your tractor some advantage, I think.

If your bushes are too thick, I'd try to impale the FEL bucket in the truck and push/raise.

I don't think adding weight to the back will help enough. If you get enough weight back there to keep it anchored, the FEL will max out probably............

Hope this helps.

Roger,

My little 35hp tractor takes out shrubs that size without even slowing down. I don't think you'll have any trouble at all with evergreens. Only problem I can foresee is possibly some ruts the yard.

thanks all for your input, DannyD, what size tractor would make it easy, My 4110 is 20 hp 1900 pounds with out fel. I am thinking of trading up to the 3520 37 horse, 2900 pounds or 3900 pound with fel.

What about a good yank with a dodge 1/2 ton 4 wheel. Drive. I hat to dig with a shovel when I have toys.

I guess I could by a 5,000 back hoe. Na. to easy.

Again thanks for your input.

I have not had much luck lifting plants out of the ground with my FEL. I use a chain or strong rope hooked to my draw bar and pull them out.

Those look like Juniper plants to me. They were the neighborhood plant that everyone was always trying to get rid of while growing up.

We'd cut them back to the stump, dig and chop around the root ball, and then pull with trucks to get them out. It was always allot of work, and most of the time it took several tries with a truck to get them out.

If you have a friend with a winch, those work really well. Just make sure the vehicle is anchored solid, cause it will plull it along.

I don't know about your tractor, but I'd at least give it a try. My thinking is you could angle your bucket so it digs under the roots. When you get to the trunk, curl up your bucket and power forward.

I do this with my tractor, but it's allot bigger, so it' might not be comparing the same thing.

Backhoe is the best way if you can get ahold of one.

Good luck,
Eddie

roermo, I'm sure a pro wouldn't do this but when I bought my house I removed 60+ feet of shrubs. I know they were in the ground for at least twenty five years I had a piece of 3/8" cable with loops at both ends, I looped one end around the base about 1 foot above ground ran it inside the end loop so that it would tighten like a slip knot. Put the other end over my trailer ball and pulled them out with my truck. What happened is when the cable tightened it did not tear at the bush, just tightened around it and sort of "peeled" it out of the ground. My neighbor took them to his Mom's place and said he didn't lose any.

I popped several large boxwoods out of the ground using bucket forks on my 4110. I clamped on the forks close together, sunk them at a sharp angle into the ground as close to the shrub as I could get. Using a combination of lifting and curling the bucket, I eventually got them all out. I now have a 3720 and recently popped a few more out with the new tractor. It went much easier with the 3720 (of course), but I did manage to get many of them out with the 4110.

I pulled up a bunch of photenias last year that had been in the ground about 20 years. Tried the FEL first and they would not budge. Hooked a chain to the draw bar, engaged 4x4, and pulled them out without too much problem. Minor lawn damage. My tractor is about 30 hp and 3000 lbs. Don't think I could have done it with much less.
