I'm new to diesels. I have a JM284 and something slipped or broke inside the fuel shutoff mechanism so it is permanently in shut-off position. Does anyone have remove/replace instructions for this unit? I've been told it can be kinda tricky. Thanks

Since the fuel cutoff is part of the sediment bowl assembly, the easiest fix is just to replace the whole thing. Eighteen bucks HERE . Then you can take the offending assembly apart, and see if it can be repaired good enough to become a shelf spare. Some of them were just drilled wrong to begin with, and aren't worth fixing.

Hi and welcome,
I'm going to assume (dangerous of me) that you are saying that fuel shut down in the injection pump is stuck in shut off position. This is a cable operated device and I believe rarely fails. It however can be damaged by physical force I guess. Did you verify it is stuck? It may be the cable seized or slipped. Try freeing up? Just a guess on my part.
If the shaft is seized or inoperable as you say then the pump will most likely have to be replaced. It isn't all that difficult but can be time consuming as you have to set injection pump timing.
Here is a link to Johns tractor that describes how others have done this. We can help walk you thru it and any questions. Hope this helps. Regards, Harry.

Ahhh, that fuel cutoff. Sorry, I misunderstood. First time I've heard of that one going bad. The one at the sediment bowl has been reported by quite a few.

LS430,while changing the injection pump is not heart surgery it will take some mech. skills, the timing on a Y-385 engine is 16 degree BTC.When you are ready to change out the pump, take the # 1 cylinder injector line off at the pump, rotate the pump until you get fuel coming up then check the timing mark,do this at least 3- times to make sure it's at the same timing mark each time.take the gear off the pump and remove it. we put some fuel in the new pump and rotate it until we get fuel coming up in the # 1 hole. Re-install the pump and gear.Once you have the engine set on the right mark do not move the engine again until the new pump and gear is installed.Set the slots in pump gear as close as you can to the middle of the slots to give you some adjustment room if you need it.Also make sure to put some oil in the new pump.If you have any questions you can PM me I will be glad to help ,we also have the parts if you need them
