Do you think you could install a phone box on the pole, and perhaps use some of the wires inside the wire bundle that runs to your house. Another thing that is possible is to put a video camera with motion sensing high on the pole that records only when there is motion. You could also trench in your own line with a subsoiler and lay it as you trench.

One thing to mention about motion sensing is that in the past, it was a complicated deal. Today, with computers, DVR's etc... it is a piece of cake. The software monitors the picture and detects changes in pixels. The software almost always is recording continuously, however, it only saves when there is an event according to parameters set by the user. Even the simplest, cheap software usually has settings for sensitivity to motion so you can exclude birds, small animals, etc... some software has masking capabilities. For instance, at my place of employment, we have a camera looking at a glass door. There is foot traffic and car traffice in view and the thing would trigger for motion constantly, except we used the masking feature and drew boxes where the glass is. So, anything that happens in the boxes does not trigger the motion sensing. However, if the door frame moves, it records. Neat stuff. Look into it.

There was a thread in this or another forum close by where one TBN member painted something to look like a fake camera and his neighbor was the guy trashing his place.

I just bought some long range IR cameras from this online store called CableGiant.com. The camera gave me vision for over 200ft. Maybe you could put a cameras down there and get the guy on video!
