Remote pond temperature monitoring

I want to be able to see the water temperature of my pond from inside the house which is about 600 feet away. I tried to use a La Crosse wireless temperature probe but its range isn't good enough

I have a Davis weather station but not the model that allows additional probes or sensors to be added. I have 4G WiFi but it probably won't cover the pond area.

I have seen Arduino based products online that have 1/2 mile wireless capabilities but have no idea how to work with that stuff.

If you decide to tackle this, just find an appropriate sensor, then figure out how to make it work with the API of the Arduino Pro and you're set. The only other thing I can suggest is to use any old thermometer and get a really good set of binoculars

If you have no programming ability, it may take a serious amount of time to navigate an open platform like this. That being said, don't let a lack of knowledge be a deterrent. This type of life hacking isn't going away. If you want to learn a second language, it really should be 10. I taught myself to code in a proprietary C environment, then graduated to a C++ superset, which led to the VS IDE. Ever since then, I view every piece of technology differently.

Funny that you posted the Arduino link. The last two days I've been pondering the best way to do a block heater on my tractor. This would be a great way to report temp data, which can be used to toggle the outlet based on established thresholds, maybe set some time and day boundaries as well.

I've been studying a bit on security cameras.... and perhaps that's why this popped into my head when i read this.

Remote temp semsor with a networked security camera pointed at it? Have no idea whether that would work but as i said got security cameras in my head right now.

I suspect there is an XBEE shield or another RF transmitter for the arduino.

On my to do list is to learn arduino and create a remote sensing system to monitor soil temperature and moisture.

I write code about every day but its not on arduino.

I have looked into this a lot, not a pond though, issue you have is it gets really cold in PA, and a lot of the electronics doesn't like to work in the colder temps. There is different ways to over come issue, but..... think large thermometer and a telescope. Sometime simplest solution is the best.

Get a wi-fi extender, They are cheap & all over Amazon. I've never used one but you can read thru the Q & A and it appears that folks are satisfied. There's a marine unit for $32 that goes 1-2 miles.
