2007 Kubota L4240
I recently purchased a Kubota L4240 and wanted to connect a log splitter to the rear remote hydraulics. I must admit, this is my first experience with remote hydraulics, so maybe I just don't understand how they should work, but the splitter isn't working much at all. Whenever I engage the tractor remotes (by bungeeing the remote handle back to the rops), there is suddenly a big load on the engine, even with the splitter's control in neutral. The splitter's cylinder will move out some, but hardly in at all.

My first thought was that the control valve on the splitter was defective. To test the tractor remotes, I just took a single hose and put quick connects on both ends of it and connected it to both of the quick attach fittings tractor side to create a loop. Whenever I engage the hydraulics, the engine loads up just the same. I would think that fluid should flow thu the loop without resistance in either direction. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Make sure the QD's are functioning correctly. If the remote relief goes off, you do not have a good flow path.

You should be able to plug into a single spool with two work ports and operate your log splitter if the tractor is open center and the log splitter is open center. Bungee the spool open.

You could also plug in the pressure line and run the OUT from the log splitter to the tractor fill cap.

Do you have a dedicated hyd line going to the back for a log splitter? If not, you can run a hose from the PB out port to a QD to the back of the tractor, and plug the pressure hose into the QD. Return/OUT hose wold go to tank.

If you are not using the PB hose, re-couple it to the hose going to the 3pt. The hyd loop is now complete.

Check the male QDs. If they are the ball type, you may need to get the poppet type. I was coming across this problem so often with Kubota that I now only supply poppet type QDs for Kubotas. ;) They are suppose to be interchangeable, but in the real world they are not always compatible. :(

MVR, Great idea, but unfortunately, I am already using the poppet type QDs.

JJ, Your reply is much appreciated, but there is much of it I don't understand.

Not sure what 'remote relief goes off' means.
Not sure what PB is.
I assume I have 'dedicated' line. There is a control with 2 QD females (see picture).

I really appreciate your assistance and please pardon my limited experience with hydraulics.

I don't think you have a good connection. Check your hoses too

Can you get some Kubota OEM ends? I believe that one of my customers ended up having to get new female ends to take care of the problem.

Just throwing that out there for consideration. ;)

Remote relief or other reliefs, are designed to relieve pressure greater than the set pressure.

On a open center valve, and you think you have things connected correctly. You push the lever and no flow , no anything except the relief goes off, and engine lugs down. That is a good indication that that a QD is not connected correctly. If the fluid can not flow, the blockage will cause the relief to activate.

If a relief valve goes off, it indicates you have met the relief pressure settings to protect the hyd system. Things that will make the relief go off are, cyl at end of travel, hyd motor stalled out, QD not connected or mis connected.

PB pertains to power beyond, which is used to pass hyd fluid downstream to the next valve, and it will handle the high pressure. Some valves have the PB port, but not used. If in use, it will have a PB adapter in it which could be a sleeve or a hex screw. If you are going to use multiple valves, they all should have PB port and PB adapter installed.

By dedicated line at the back, I am referring to the hose coming from the FEL PB outlet to service a log splitter or a BH. This will usually remove the remote valve and 3pt from the series circuit. Both log splitter and BH have their own valve.

If not using the dedicated line, a loop hose is connected to the dedicated QD, and will probably go to a remote or 3pt to reestablish a series flow through all valves.

As far as Kubota OEM female ends goes, I checked 2 local Kubota dealers and they both use the Pioneer ball or poppet type connectors, neither had an acutal Kubota brand. Thanks for all the suggestions, I will check them out and post results in a day or 2.
