I'd probably take the gravel off the top. I'd be afraid with ground contact on both sides it would rot in short order.

We have a lot of flat rocks around, so I’ll be able to lift it up, dig it out a bit, and put down stone.

But it’s already gotten cold so that will be next spring, unless we get a lengthy thaw.
