Refurbishing a fuel tank?

   / Refurbishing a fuel tank? #21
Alan,

I appreciate the idea, but one thing that really drives me nuts is when someone jerry-rigs something instead of fixing it correctly. There's no way I'm going to do that. I would spend the $250 and replace the tank before I would try to jerry-rig some other tank above the generator.

Your choice obviously, but I find it humorous that you would call what I suggested jerry rigging, and what you are about to do, kreeming a tank a proper repair.

Hope you get it working.

Good morning Dave,

We took our holiday last weekend and went camping. Less crowds and traffic. My wife had Monday off so we took the kids out of school for the day, I took vacation, and we enjoyed ourselves.

As for the fuel tank, I'm leaning heavily toward the Kreem method. Now it's just figuring out how to protect the inside diameter of the fuel outlet tube so I can still put the inline filter insert into it. Keep the good ideas comming guys. I wont be doing it for a couple weeks yet so I have time.

Cyril I just reread your post and see you didn,t say the tank was leaking or had holes in it so just a cleaning will work. There is no coating in the tank according to my buddy that has the local honda shop.Sand outside repaint and should be good as new.I checked with him on replacment tank price for ya and as it,s the holiday weekend he didn,t have the prices on him,but said you wouldn,t save anything by the time it was shipped to you etc.He did agree ,clean and repaint with any good quality enamel (as it,s only stamped steel) your good to go.Glad you had a good pre holiday weekend.I agree about the crowds.Any more than a few friends feels like a moob to me:laughing:Dave

Good morning Alan,

Didn't mean to be insultive. I've got a couple pieces of equipment that every time I go to try to work on them, I find that something has been modified from stock to make a repair in the past and it drives me nuts trying to figure out what they did so that I can fix it.

Here is a picture of a Honda EX5500 generator.

The fuel tank is under the top rear part of the cover. The small door is where the fuel cap and guage are located. The front cover opens for access to the engine. I kind of have trouble trying to picture an outboard fuel tank mounted there without looking out of place.

I hope this helps explain the terminology I used.

I have a hard time with the typing conversations cuz it,s sooo easy to miss judge a meaning.I see your point completly about the (what I call broke farmer repairs) had to fix more crap that someone had prior farm repaired and didn,t like it one bit.Alan I,m sure was looking at the least cost repair and so it goes.Thats probly why I,m always splanin myself.:D I meant mob not moob.Anyway glad you had a good weekend and I,m sure the kid,s didn,t mind the extra day off either.Hows your BBQ plans shappin up?Sure would like to be able to make it out but just cannot.I do very little driving and after making the trip to Colorado I can,t head futher west. It,s about 2,300 miles I think.Hope all goes well though.Take care:thumbsup:Dave

We have interest, so I'm going forward with it. I don't know how many people will make it, but we're going to try to have as much fun as possible. Somewhere around the first of August, I'll try to pin down a number so I know how much beef to take out.

BTW, Dave's refering to my thread :http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/related-topics/170534-how-do-you-like-your.html. Anyone who would like to come is welcome.

Look up POR15.com they make products for dealing w/ rust, their flagship product is POR!15 which stands for 'Paint Over Rust'. These products are pricy and get used alot in the restoration of rare antique autos. They sell a gas tank restoration kit w/ their metal cleaner and a POR15 style coating designed just for rusted gas tanks.

DCYRILC,

In my original post I didn't go into detail about my reason for using the Kreeme formula.....my project was for a rare '66 Harley Moped Tank....rusty inside and leaking also....the Kreeme method for me worked great cuz the inside of the tank is perfectly clean and white (smooth as a baby's butt)....the outside is completely original (as not to degrade the value of the cycle).....before restoration the rust in the tank contaminated the carb several times before we went to this method.....the Kreeme white coating I believe is some type of PVC.....impervious to gas....one look in the tank looks like the day we did it.....as far as painting the outside that was completely out of the question as we needed internal corrosion protection plus originality for the cycle.....Your situation is different as you have more options:)

The BB idea is good but we used a couple of handfulls of clean crushed gravel from outside (Its cheap and real aggressive on the rust inside)

I have used the POR15 on several tanks over the last few years and it works great! I have also had the misfortune of have to completely overhaul several fuel systems... carbs, lines, the whole shebang... because KREEM is not (at least in the past) resistant to ALCOHOL !!!! Many of todays gasoline companys use alcohol to oxygenate the fuel and at a 10% alcohol mixture the KREEM turns to cottage cheese and plugs up everything.

Be sure KREEM is stablile for alcohol now.

Thanks, Mark in NE INdiana

Thanks for the heads up on that. I'll make sure to check before buying if I decide to go that route.
