Reecourse when item damaged by Post Office?

I still don't see why it is the shippers fault or the credit card company or ebay.
Sounds like insurance was offered since the cost was known, but declined by the purchaser. So the shipper should lose because a purchaser did NOT want to buy insurance? That ain't right as they say.....

You would think that's the way it works, but it's not. If you can prove the damage was done to your package or that it was not delivered then PayPay (owned by Ebay) will refund your money (as a buyer).

As the seller, if you didn't have insurance, then you are SOL. You loose the item and your money.

Ebay is very "buyer" oriented. Your best protection as a seller is to insure everything and require a signature on every package. I also require an adult signature on most items.

Nowhere did anyone say insurance was offered. Shipping was the sole responsibility of the Seller even if the cost was passed on to the buyer.

Updates...

Before I forget... Insurance was not offered or available on my end.

Was at the post office when it opened this morning and the person in charge said the item was improperly packaged for automated sorting. She said packages go down a line and mechanically pushed from one conveyor to another and drop into wheeled canvas totes.

Something fragile, as the box was marked in many places by the Post Office needs to be triple boxed.

If there had been insurance, the Post Office would still need to determine if the packaging was suitable for the item... Then she said something that I did not quite follow... I guess some things are not insurable.

Postmistress offered to write refused on the package and return to sender.

I need to update my seller who last night offered to send a replacement...

Well, I refused the package and it was returned... the seller said he can not be responsible for post office damage and offered to replace the item at 50% discount... still, this is $50 and how do I know the next item will not arrive damaged?

My cousin stationed overseas has asked me to go ahead.

My credit card bill arrived and there is still time for me to dispute the charge...

If it was up to me, this is what I would do.

Post Office denies any responsibility.

The seller is responsible for proper packaging which sounds like was not done. If they don't want to replace it, dispute the charge and find a different seller.

PayPal Purchase Protection
•The item was damaged en route to its destination.
Example: You bought a beautiful antique lamp - and it arrived in pieces
The process here is the same as above - log in to your account and open a dispute to get the ball rolling
just to to paypal.com

This kind of stuff is what makes Paypal charges too high for the folks that never need it. I use them, however, I had rather have credit card sales anytime. Ken Sweet

Contact Paypal and file a dispute. They will get your money back and/or a new item.

The seller should have offered or included insurance on a glass item...

Shipping insurance only covers the shipper, not the receiver. If a claim is filed on an insured item, the payment will go to the shipper and chances are the claim will have to filed by the shipper. That is why most ebay sellers don't insure at their cost. They have nothing to lose.

This is what I was told by the local post office when I received a pancaked package. Only the shipper is covered.
To be fair to the shipper, file a claim/report on his behalf. Inform the shipper of the problem. Contest the charge to get all your money back. Start fresh with another order if you really want this item.

Replacement arrived via FedEx today... in perfect shape, not a mark on the package.

The first one that arrived damaged look like someone had taken a hammer or rod and poke holes through the box.

Funny thing is both boxes are identical...
