Creekbend, it depends on who one is when they call someone a redneck. For some groups it means a racist bigot for others it means a hardworking person who earns a living working outdoors or at a trade. The original meaning goes back to West Virginia coal miners who wore red bandanas around their necks and something to do with whether they were union workers or not. There was some sort of uprising among the red bandana wearers. I don't recall the exact history.
Some of my best friends are down to earth country folks with traditional values - most don't mind the term redneck among themselves - just don't call them one if you aren't one! I'd rather go to war with a bunch of rednecks on my side than a bunch of intellectuals.
