I have a 187d with the charging light on. Battery not charging. There's a red wire coming out of the wiring harness along with the + battery cable. This red wire has a plug-together type connection but there's no wire plugged into it. The positive battery terminal cable end has been replaced. Other then the large + battery cable there is no other wire connected to the + cable end.

Anyone know what this red wire is for and should it be connected to the + battery cable end? I've seen a lot of + battery terminals with a red wire coming off the cable end along with the main battery cable.

Also, anyone know where the voltage regulator on this thing is and whether there is a replacement at the local parts store or JDeere dealer?

The red wire is a hot wire to engage the front PTO, when one is installed. Do not connect it the battery.
The voltage regulator is probably what's bad and causing your tractor not to charge. It is located on the firewall and has fins on it, it usually is mounted with two Phillips screws. I don't know if J.D. will fit/work. But I can ship you one, contact me for price. Thanks, Gary J.
