Red Tailed Hawk kill

I live about 35 miles from Dulles Airport which is reputed to be the largest concentration of Red Tails on the Eastern Seaboard. When driving on the roads around it you would think that every telephone pole has a hawk installed on it. Not sure what the attraction is but they are thick! Dulles also has a HUGE population of white tail deer. Once you could get a permit to hunt them (shotguns,only) but that sort of ended with 911. Now the police swat teams go in and clear a bunch out at a time.

Seen such action on Discovery Channel..polar bear breaks in homes while folks are sleeping looking for food...honey I think there somebody downstairs..go look.

I second that, I used to drive by the airport 5 times a week - VA 606 - and the number of wild life is amazing.

I used to work at the local airport refueling airplanes and such... We'd find red tailed hawks sliced in half inside engine cowlings several times a year. You'd notice them mostly in the radial engines because there was no cowling covering the cylinder jugs from the front. It was almost always the head, right wing and a diagonal cut across the breast. Rarely would you find the left wing and legs. Ick!

Lots of hawks down here around where I live near FLA. everglades.Have enjoyed watching them many a time doing their thing.
Not to get offtrack but I'am sure most of you's know about American(USA) native bird feather possesion law(s).
Migratory Bird Treaty Act.By what I understand it is illegal to possess most bird feathers(whether you found them on side of road by roadkill or on ground whatever).

Yep. Goes so far that there are problems trading American Indian artifacts.

There are people who believe diminishing numbers of game birds are due to hawk protection program.

Yep. And its also illegal in some states to hand raise an orphaned baby bird or rabbit, etc... unless you are a licensed wildlife rehab person.

Twice now, I have been in my backyard and heard a loud "Whoosh" over my head leading me to instinctively react by looking out over my pond for a flock of descending ducks only not to see any and then discover that a Bald Eagle had just nailed a Red Tail hawk over my shoulder and took the hawk up on a dead limb to devour him.....
