Reading this thread reminded me of the gadget I made back about 2003, I needed a drywall lift to install drywall on the ceiling of a 1500 square foot addition plus 800 square foot of basement ceiling BY MYSELF. What I did was, I set up a pallet rack about 4 feet high in every room, and when they delivered the drywall I had the crew stack the drywall needed for each ceiling on the pallet rack. I made an oddball drywall lift from a base from a folding chair cart, the uprights are basement JACK POSTS that telescope, and the upper part to support the drywall is a 2X4 wood frame. And yes, that is a car jack I modified to use as a lifter. I would slide a sheet of drywall from the rack onto the wood frame which was about 4 1/2 feet high, then jack the wood frame up about 2 feet, insert wood dowels into the holes in the jack posts to keep the wood frame elevated, lower the jack, add a brace to give it more lifting height, remove the dowels, and jack the sheet up to the ceiling. It was a single purpose tool but worked GREAT. Sorry for poor pic quality these are digipics of print pics but shows the concept. Saved me several hundred dollars of rental fees. Go ahead and laugh, I did when I saw these pictures again.
