Hi all. I am purchasing a house this fall and we are looking at getting a garden tractor and snow blower attachment. The driveway is about 350' long and we live in Northeast Ohio so we get our fair share of snow. The yard to mow will be about an acre. Our budget is probably something less that $5k but would like to stick around 4k if possible. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've looked at the JD X300 series and that looks promising but I've also read some negative reviews too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all for you help!

I say get something built before 1985 - those were the good ones. I bought a house last year with a 800ft. gravel drive - also got this 16HP Snapper w/ blower for $400 out of Craig's list. It did the job quite well, although I did blow the belts in the blower on the last storm of the season - should've replaced them first, but I have new ones for it now.

I welded up a cab out of some electrical conduit and used sheet vinyl from a fabric store to make a cab (don't have a pic) - cost me $29 including a can of spray paint.

OTOH, I'm going to be running a 6' 3pt blower on the back of my L4200GST this year...

The best lawn and garden tractor I have every used for snow was my dad's Gravely 8173 (which he still has). These machines are bulletproof and have rear engines for superior traction. They are getting a bit long in the tooth and hard to find, but Mark Shubert at Shubert Gravely in Newton, NC has a couple in stock that he took on trade. They might just fit the bill with either a blower or plow (you might be on your own with the blower). That machine would cost much less than your price range and would give you years of good service. Another alternative is to go with a previous generation 300 series JD (such as a 325 or 335). Air cooled mid hours versions of these would likely not be much over $4K in price and will run 1500 hours without much trouble in most cases. They would power a blower well. As for new tractors, I have had and operated a little X 360 JD and that is one nice little machine. It does not have diff lock, but it has plenty of engine power, power steering, and a hydro lift. It would easily power a SB and with chains and a weight box in back would do just fine. It has the heavier hydro tranny and is a really nice tractor. With the attachments you want, it would be a bit over your price range, but probably not by enough that you should not look at it as a potential machine.

Are you looking at new or used?

I've owned a few Cub Cadet 3000 series with blowers and they are snowmovers. I personally prefer the hydraulically angled plow, but have had both and the blower is quite capable as well. And, some of the 3000's have the differential rear lock which is very nice. I preferred the GT3200, which is a 25HP Kohler command. They have power steering, hydraulic lift, shaft drive, and reverse cutting.
You can get mower decks from 44" to 60". New ones are 6K+, but used ones can be had for under your budget. Very capable machines.
Good luck!

Hi......I'm really happy with my JD 455.......cab is great but needs a heater, all controls are hydraulic and a diesel engine has lots of power and is much more economical to run than a gas engine. (location eastern Ontario)
Thanks.....Casey

Beautiful picture, 816??? Looks like an Onan. Nothing like seeing the Gravely doing the job. Thanks for sharing that.

Yep, 816, Onan twin P18 (repowered about 10 years ago). thanks for the compliment. The neighbors all seem to like the Gravelys too...

Well I was just quote a shade over 4k for a x300 with the blower, weights, and chains, not sure what you guys think about that.

I'm still looking for used, but haven't had any luck yet.

I think the X 300 is a little small. What about the price on a 320 or 360??
