Recoil Spring

Not really tractor related but someone probably knows. I broke the recoil spring in an old chainsaw and wondering if when repairing it, should I heat up the tip of the spring to bend it, or just bend it and hope for the best ? Any opinions? Thanks in advance.

My experience with lawnmower is that if you try bending cold it will probably break.

Heat and bend then dunk it in oil or even water, that'll harden the new hook.
Been there done that!

Heck Never had a spare on hand when needed and you does what you has to.

Don't really want to spend money on this old piece of crap so I will give heating and bending a try. Thanks
