I have a pole barn on property I acquired a little over a year ago
and I want to repair it. I am 59 years old and will have a 25 year old female helper, who is strong and I have no problem with climbing or lifting either.
I am going to try and get this done before summer is over in Texas near
Cut and Shoot, What I am here for is to post pictures and hopefully get advice
on the best way to start this and end it with a finished barn I am going to link
a picture of the bad side of the barn, actually the opposite side is great but
it appears that I will have to run a new ridge anyway I hope to get help here at this forum. Thank you and take care

This is the front, the left side is good but as I said the Ridge board is like a snake. The left side also has some concrete slabs for work bays

I can't open the site of your pictures.
From what I see take the roof off and start over.
Replace any posts holding the roof that are in bad shape.
Replace any wall sections that need it.
Install rain gutters and a french drain to keep water out of the barn.

Follow the design of the original builder, looks like a sound design, not fancy but functional. If weathered wood is solid replace the missing strapping under the metal roof on the rafters and make quick low budget work of the project. Your estimate of "by end of summer" sounds like you are looking into making modifications? I'd advise sticking to the original design. I'd caution adding OBS underlayment or plywood under the metal, it adds weight that might not have been factored into the original load. I've heard of felt/tar paper being used under the metal to help with condensation (rain in the barn), but it can also be a host for small critters. Good Luck.

As should be obvious from the failure, the original roof design stinks. Stick framed rafters do not sit on the ridge board, they lean against each other, and the ridge board is just there to keep them from sliding sideways. At the very least, collar ties would help, but all of the beams need to be substantial. You need to take the whole roof apart and replace the 2x beams with real structural members, glu-lams, or you could build your own box beams. Then move the rafters closer together and add some new lumber. I can't say much for the 1x purlins laying flat, but you need something to screw the sheet metal to. Also, this time use screws or hot dipped galv nails to put things together. Maybe the next roof won't blow off.

Alternatively, you could build (or buy) trusses to go from post to post and use the rafters as purlins instead. That way you could use the 1x lumber somewhere else.

Could you also post a photo of the female?
