Reasonable service charge?

Now that I have opened a can of worms, does anybody know what actually happened? Did the owner get a refund/credit/stiffarm/or ignored?

PaulChristenson,
Which one? There are two Rome, Ny, USA listed on my map. You are probably going to the one just west of Utica, but there is another one right next to Au Sable Forks, Ny. The only reason I knew of that one was because I got a load to deliver there once and found it on my laptop. I used the other one first but the zip code kept bringing up the wrong one, so I made a call before I got too far and the customer told me it was the northern one. I called dispatch and made them correct the milage because it showed going to the wrong one and that one was about 175 miles closer than the one I was going to. Took me forever to get them to understand that a wide place on the map could be the right one, whereas a small city is wrong. They didn't want to pay me the extra miles, since they had messed up and agreed to run the load for a flat rate, based on the lesser milage.
They finally paid me the difference two months later. Gotta watch them trucking companies every second...

Ack. Sorry I didn't see this thread pop up again. (The automatic email notification isn't working for me -- don't know why.)

Anyway, I wrote a complaint letter with a full payment. I got a personal letter back with my uncashed check. The owner apologized for not being clear in advance about the transportation costs, but said that it was standard practice. He then suggested that I pay half, but did not send me a new invoice, implying that it was my call.

I thought it was a reasonable misunderstanding and a good faith effort at a fair resolution. I since have found a closer service company that said they would have done the work for $70 transportation. In retrospect, I would have probably agreed to pay <$100 for the service call because even though it was a simple fix, I was unable to diagnose the problem. So I decided to pay the $95 and chalked it up to a learning experience.

It is a little easier to stomach after having it explained to you. It would have been a lot easier to stomach if the had told you prior, but at least they were nice about it.
The cheapest guy isn't allways the best, so keep that in mind. They all have to make a living.
