Hi everyone, looking for some advice on my wheel and tire situation. I've tried to read previous posts on the topic and don't feel much smarter on the subject.

The wheels on my 2040 are it fairly rough shape and now starting to leak. They are filled and both very rusty around the valve stems. Tires are in decent shape. I use the tractor for hobby stuff. Right now that's just loader work...and a fun father-son project to fix up. The current tires are 14.9 - 28. Wheels are 6 loop and I'm guessing 13". I was hoping to track down some used wheels and save the trouble of patching the old ones. While I want to improve my welding skills, there are probably better projects to focus on.

The best used option I can find locally in the same size I currently have is a pair of wheels and dishes that already have R4 8 ply tires mounted. Those tires are more worn than mine, but would work for my needs until I can get the others sorted out. They look like the same as what I already have. Seller is asking $375 for the pair. Seem like a reasonable deal?

Or, am I better off going down a size to get into less expensive rims and rubber? I don't plan to continue running filled tires and instead building a ballast for the 3pt that I can remove when I need it lighter.

He is also selling new front tires, which could be afford to be replaced. They are tri rib tires, which I'm wondering if now I'm mostly doing loader work either on the driveway and yard, should I go with truck tires instead?

Thanks for any help

$375 seem very reasonable for wheels, centers and used tires. Check eBay, there are sellers with new tires on wheels with centers, usually new take offs. Then decide if new tires will be a better deal.

For the fronts, check the ply rating for a loader I would want at least 8ply.

The 6" pilot and 8" bolt circle is pretty common in the Deere world. Unfortunately back then they where just held to axle with 9/16 hardware. This will limit your choices for used to 20-50 series utilites (approximately). New wheels from oem will be over 2k, I agree $375 seems pretty reasonable.

The $375 deal tires are about done...maybe 20% left? But, for my needs, as long as the wheels are decent, its probably the better deal for me.

Wasn't able to go pick up those used tires and wheels before they were sold to someone else. I think I was measuring the rims wrong and believe I have 12", not 13". The part that confuses me is that my tires are printed with "14.9 x 28 on 13" rims". Am I correct that 14.9x28 could be mounted to a 12" rim?

On a different point, I can't get the center off the old rim. These things are packed with rust. I've whacked them pretty well with a hammer and they won't budge. Where am I going wrong?

You might check with the ag salvage yards. Just google ag salvage yards on the internet. There is a good probability that john deer 55 combine wheels might fit it. Also, old allis chalmers wheels my fit. Here is my allis with john deere wheels:IMG_20180516_113424.jpgIMG_20180516_113407.jpgIMG_20180405_183923.jpg20180330_154713.jpgIMG_20180405_183923.jpgIMG_20180320_174359.jpgIMG_20180320_174351.jpg

As far as separating the centers from the a good dose of penetrating oil on the bolts and eyes, then put the nuts back on and start driving them back and forth with a big hammer and continually keep adding penetrating oil. Good luck with the wheel search lots of places to check for them.
