If a person wanted to add a grapple ( me) to save money after buying a new XR4140HC could you run the front 3rd function off the rear remote by just running hoses to the front and making sure they are secure and long enough for full function?

That is what I have done on my tractor, I use the tractor hydraulics going to the front of the loader for my grapple and snow blade angling.

Yes, I've done the same to operate a power angle plow, hydraulic post hole auger or a thumb on my forks.

A lot of people do that. It's an option that is considerably less expensive than adding a 3rd function as long as you can sacrifice the use of the rear remote and the convenience of having the control on the loader joystick.

If I would have had rear remotes I probably gone that route;didn't so went with a third function and really like that set-up.I have run(temporary) hoses to the rear for a planter.

I went the whole nine yards and had a WR Long third function installed. It runs the jaws - open/close on the grapple. It's handy to have the toggle on the joy stick. I'm sure I could have been satisfied with the third function coming off the rear remotes also.

For those who use rear SCV: Do you have disconnects/connectors on both ends of the long hoses that connect to short hoses on the grapple, or are they directly connected to the grapple's cylinder?

I've been considering putting a poor man's grapple on my fork frame (something like "The Thumb").
How much would you expect to pay for 2 long hoses with quick connectors on both ends?
How much would you expect to pay for a couple short stub hoses with quick connectors from the grapple ( or "The Thumb") that I would connect into the long hoses?
Or is there a better way?

I ran the lines from my rear valve up under the cab to the loader frame, following the factory lines along the loader boom then to my quick connector mounted on the loader torque tube. The fancy 9500 series quick connector was my most expensive (about $120) piece and I had that from a previous purchase on sale. A 3/8" 120" jic ended hose will be $27 to $28 from Surplus Center.
A fairly easy way to figure out the length lines that you will need is to route a garden hose thru were you would run the hoses mark it then pull it out to measure.
As far as the quick connects they can run from $20 a set on up,

I have 3 remotes, the top one is going to my hydraulic top link, the middle one to the back blade and the lower one with the right angle fittings is going to the front. Depending on what's going on I can and do move them around.

to the quick connectors, this fancy one is not needed but is nice, any of the bracketed ones would work.

You want to have disconnects at the grapple so you can leave the lines on the tractor otherwise it would be a major pain to swap the grapple with other implements if you had 20' hoses attached to them. The long hoses stay with the tractor, short hoses from tractor to grapple connecting on the loader frame up front.
