Speaking of 'no tape' areas. Can't tell you how many teflon threads I've dug out of other people's carbs'..

Three and a half wraps of tape on a male tip can split the tip. I have seen it done many times in our shop and we have had severial customers bring back tips that are cracked from using too much tape. One and a half is all it takes to seal pipe threads.

About the Liquid Thread dope versus Tape, When I picked up the New Toy, I noticed Hyd Fluid on the PTO Shield, ran my finger under one of the Remotes and it was wet with oil.

Pointed it out to the Owner/Salesman, He commented that the Remotes were just installed an hour ago, "The Dopes in the shop love to you that blame Liquid Pipe Dope, I use nothing but Tape" , they then had to take the Quick Couplings off , while he supervised to make sure they used 3.5 wraps of Teflon Tape.

Hasn't leaked a Drop.

Teflon tape should not be used on fittings that are tapered (NPT) and seal with an interference fit, or on straight threads (NPS) in high pressure situations. JIC fittings can use teflon tape on the threads since the sealing is done on the flare tip but caution should be used so that no pieces of tape touch the flare end.

Teflon tape was not originally designed for high pressure applications where as teflon paste was. Teflon paste will not only provide good sealing at pressures up to 10,000 psi and temperatures between -50 F and +400 F, but it will also lubricate the threads as well. Anybody who uses teflon tape for high pressure applications just doesn't understand what they are doing. My local hydraulic shop never uses teflon tape for anything and he welcomes business generated by customers who decide to use the tape instead of the paste.
