Rear Axle Seal

My L4350 has begun leaking oil on the right rear wheel. I suspect I need to replace the seals. The big question is, can I do this or is this a job better for my dealer to handle.

Depends on how "handy" you are with tools. I think you need to separate the axle from the center body, then use a puller to take off the inner ball bearing, then you can unstake and remove the axle nut -- then tap out the axle and replace the outer seal

If you saw the blood blisters under both of my thumbs, you might wonder.... But I am fairly handy.

So is going in from the top necessary to free the axle? Looking at the exploded view it's hard to tell.

Looking at the picture you posted it looks like you need to unbolt part #120 and remove as a unit then take that assembly apart and replace the seal.

I just took a closer look at it. If I have to remove the housing (part #120) like you mention, then it really complicates things. The roll bar is mounted to the axle housing and it's a multi-part affair that the fender is sandwiched in. It looks like a fair amount of disassembly is required. Not to mention that housing looks seriously heavy. I may have to let my dealership handle this one.

Na, but it takes months for the nails to grow out and I get to look like a klutz the whole time.

Given the size of that housing, I figure I might end up with a few more if I go it alone.

I don't know. If it is just a lot of straightforward disassembly and re-assembly, the dealer charges by the hour. Digital cameras are wonderful things. Take pictures at each step and re-assembly will go a lot easier.

Any time I can substitute my labor for lower skilled store-bought labor, I come out ahead.

Now if the only place I have to work is a mud pit which freezes from time to time, then I would head to the dealer...
