Ready for Dear Season to start this weekend

My season ended Wednesday when this guy came back about 8 am: Wildlife 2015 005.JPG He maxed out my 160 lb. bale scales (field dressed) & I didn't have his front feet & head of the ground yet! Seven points, one broken off on the right side. Wildlife 2015 011.jpg Finished grinding today with 44 lbs. of burger for the freezer.

Well we finally scored:my son connected with this fine eight pt.this morning.178# dressed. We believe it's the same one we had pictures of earlier.
The other good news;our neighbor had a monster eight point with-in 25 yards yesterday;said it would make this one look small. He was hunting with a bow and had no shot.
The rut in Northern NY is really starting to pick up.Our problem is we have way too many does.
This deer's left eye was recently poked out;probably with a another buck of equal or larger size.

Now that's I nice Adirondack buck, congrats!! I used to hunt up at our deer camp in Long Lake. Are you anywhere near there?

No,we are in the St.Lawrence River Valley;flat farm country. Our deer eat lots of corn and soybeans plus nature's bounty.Totally different kind of hunting than the mountains.

OK, I'm a dummy. Just how in the heck do you "pull" an elk out of the woods?
I've shot a few elk and with every one of them, I cut them up where they ended up. I carry 6 pillow cases and some parachute cord with me, then I put each boned out quarter into a pillow case, tie it closed and hang it from a branch. Six pillow cases works out pretty good for all the meat and makes the weight about right to pack them out one at a time. Seven trips for a big bull with the antlers coming out last.

Most of the elk hunts I've gone on have been pack in, drop off hunts. We hire an outfitter to take us in on horseback, then come back during the week to check on us, and then at the end to haul us out. If there is an animal down, they will ride to where the meat is hanging in the tree. I've only had to carry an elk all the way out twice. That took awhile!!!!

Whew! That sure sounds like a lot of work but well worth it! ;)

Eddie, I've shot quite a few moose, same thing, bone them on the spot and pack them out... Sometimes to a plane, sometimes to a boat and some times to the road system,

Ya gotta go where they are!!

Wow, that rack looks like it could do some serious damage to somebody if the moose were to get really mad. What do you use to shoot something that big...bazooka? Would a 30-06 do the job?

30-06 is about perfect, just as long as you use ammo that has good tough bullets in it. I prefer Nosler Partitions for most all of my big game hunting...

I use NP's for everything from moose and brown bear, on down to deer or caribou, like in this pict..

Great bullets,

Nice to see the moose and caribou pics. I've hunted moose twice in Alaska without getting one. I've seen plenty, but not one big enough to want to deal with packing it out. My Alaska caribou took two days to get to camp because I shot it so far away and it was horrible walking through the tundra.

Love seeing those chocolate antlers on those TX bucks Eddie!

I was fortunate enough to get one with my bow a few weeks ago here in Central MO.
