1948 JD A w/ Rollamatic
Is there a practical way to change a 1948 model A JD with
Rollmatic front end to a wide front end our 1948 model B
JD was ordered new with a wide front end and we switched
it out and put a single front end when we V'd ditchs?
Another question: didn't there use to be a power steering
attachment that was coupled above the hood in the steering shaft between the steering shaft pedestal and the steering sector.
Thanks for any help you can give, RDGrader

It's possible to put a wide front end under it, practical would be up to you, I guess. Might be kinda' pricey though. John Deere did have the AW model with the factory wide front, and there were a couple after market wide front ends. Speco made one, and the other one escapes me at the moment.

You're probably thinking of the Char-Lynn units for the power steering. Not sure about the JD's, but on a Farmall M I had, the worm gear end, and sector gear were with the unit, changing the gear ratio. Found that out, when the unit quit working, and it was going to cost right at $500.00 for a new pump, and converted back to standard steering. Tried to install the worm gear, and it would not go. Sent Dad back to the salvage yard, and told the guy he gave him the wrong one. Nope..., had to get the sector gear too...

I'm thinkng, unless you run a cross a great deal, it'd be close to at least $1500.00 to $2000.00 to add both.

You can go here: Used Tractors For Sale at TractorHouse.com: John Deere Tractors, used farm tractors and farm equipment, tractors for sale, Case IH, New Holland, Agco, Kubota And post a "want to buy" ad. (Third item down at the top left) You'll need to register with them, and give contact info.

What you are looking for, is probably out there somewhere. It's just up to you, what you want to spend on doing it, making it practical for you.

The name of one of the aftermarket power steering conversions was Char-Lyn. It sound as if your tractor has a split frt pedestal so all you need to do is find the correct wide frt axle.
