On another note chains and binders will last a long time if you want to leave stuff out.

Yep. Take care of your stuff and usually it will last. Abuse it and it won't.

Straps arrived today. Have not had a chance to use them yet. Look unused but with some powdery oxidation on them from probably years in storage. Look quite beefy and very robust ratchet assembly. Think these will work out just fine for me

Thanks for all the comments so far; I will go through them in more detail in coming days.

For greater precision, I'm in temperate Ontario, with modest sun, rain, snow all making an appearance. No salt, and not the burning relentless sun of some of you down south.

I've had no trouble with the actual strap webbing (except when caused by operator stupidity...). All my trouble has been with the mechanism, whether the actual ratchet/release or the retraction spring. I do keep them out of the elements, i.e. inside vehicle or storage shed, most of the time, but occasionally forget. But keep the suggestions coming, even if they're addressing other points of failure than mine, ones which might apply to others!

Someone mentioned not being familiar with retractable ones. Here's a link to the initial ones I got (This is a Canadian link, in C$, but I expect they're available all over): General PDP Template Note these are the ones that *don't* last for me.

I have three of the USCC straps that I bought at TSC back in the 1990's and they still work with no issues. I keep them in a canvas bag in my truck, have never oiled the mechanism and use them on a regular basis several times a week. They have not rusted or shown any signs of rust. If I use in the rain, I dry the mechanism off best I can and leave them out of the bag to dry the fabric before storing them away. Two are 1-1/2 inches wide and one is a 2 (or 2-1/2") inches and they were inexpensive when I bought them (I probably have $50-$60US invested.) All three have tags that indicate they were made in US. Prior to that I used chain and a ratchet binder. I have used these to secure loads in a trailer, my pick up, a flat bed one ton and vehicles on an equipment trailer and they work fine. I still use chain and binder for tractors or heavier equipment like a dozer. I have not oiled my mechanism because I felt it would attract dust or dirt that might gum up the works, plus it works just fine as is, so no need to apply any type of lubricant. I think our local TSC sells straps like you included in your link and not the USCC straps like I got, but the USCC (US cargo control) straps can be bought from industrial supply or contractor supply outlets and probably directly from them via the web. These straps are definitely not new but for $8, will work wonderfully at holding our 6x6 down. Will post pics of them doing that job later. These will also be abused and used in wet conditions.

Coleman's Surplus (look them up) has many ratchet straps, some military. Shipping is very expensive. They have a lot of nice products. Foot ware to keep your toes warm this winter.
I have many ratchet straps, some 12 or 15 years old. I handle them with great care because I depend on them. Suggest you keep yours very clean, well protected, untangled, and out of the sun.

I looked them up and just ordered the 4 piece ratchet strap kit for $25 plus $15 for shipping. I think that's a bit high for shipping, but if they are better then the junk I just bought, it's money well spent.
