Our barn (parts storage-part concrete floor, but part dirt floor)) has had no dogs or cats in it for about 6 months. Clear evidence that mice and their larger relatives are moving in. I know we can achieve some control with various baits, but would like to know if any of you have had any success with any of the repeating traps on the market. Thanks for any first-hand information.

Two years ago we had the old farm infested with them. We never had a problem before with rats since I've been around the place since 1971. D-Con took care of ever single one of them. I also caught a few in the large rat traps using cheese and shot a few with my 22 rifle.

I bought a poultry farm out of foreclosure and had a huge rat infestation problem. I have been using Hombre brand blocks and the problems have about gone away. But I have not used the traps.

One of the baits I got at a True Value Hardware store a few years ago seemed to work pretty well, but I don't remember what it was called. I've just always had the best luck with the old fashioned mouse and rat traps baited with raw bacon tied on with a string or thread. They go for peanut butter very well, but can occasionally lick it off without tripping the trap. The same with cheese, but they seem to like bacon even better and can't get it off without tripping it.

I have used the Victor "Tin Cat" with success on mice.
Rats are too big to fit in.
