Rant on check books

Never use a deposit slip any more. We have the account number written on a card. Put that in with the checks to be deposited and into the drive through tube it goes. Out comes the receipt and the card for use the next time.

Pay almost all the bills on line through our credit union's web site. They electronically wire the money to 90% of the places we pay. If not they generate the check and cover the postage to boot. It takes a bit of time to set it all up the first time. However once you tell them your electric company is AEP and your account number is 123456 they take it from there the rest of the times. Paying bills takes only a few minutes a month after it is all set up.

Also you can order checks and deposit slips from other companies that are not your bank. They are usually cheaper than what the bank charges. Costco sells them.

My wife has worked at a financial institution for close to 40 years. So I'm married to the institution. Just this year she decided to start using on-line bill payments. She loves it. Set it all up, then once in a while she logs in, selects which bills get paid, checks the boxes, hits PAY and off they go. She doesn't know why she waited so long to do it other than old habits. She also no longer balances the checkbook to the penny. She rounds up to the next dollar and we end up with a few dollars more in the account than we expected at the end of each month.

As for checks, she still writes and receives several checks each month. Any checks she gets, she takes a picture of it, submits it to savings, then uses on-line banking to move money between our accounts as needed. I haven't been to the institution to do transactions in decades. Just the ATM for any cash needs. Wife hasn't been there since April, working from home due to the pandemic. So everything is on-line or ATM. No deposit slips needed ever.

I"ve found that if I order checks through the website they are around $45.00. If I call up the CU and order them, it's around $15 for 200 checks. Don't ask me what the difference is, they come from the same place and look the same.

I know, who uses checkbooks anymore....

However, they charge me like $45 with shipping (they actually came pretty fast, no complaints on shipping:D) however, I only get like 4 packs of checks and what really peeves me off is they only give me 2 deposit slips per check book!!!!

Just made a deposit yesterday, found out I missed a check I needed to deposit and I only have one deposit slip left. If you're going to charge me a premium price for being a dinosaur and still actually using handwritten checks, do me the favor and give me more than two deposit slips per check book!

My checks were free - some 35 years - until this year they started to charge. Limited deposit slips but I most of my deposits are 'direct deposit' and the few that aren't I usually have other business in the bank anyhow and to them there.

I use computer printed 3 part checks ordered about 1,000 at a time from Costco. Was not too expensive. Way easier on my old brain to use quickbooks to write checks. No need for deposit slips, as my atm only requires stamp on back of check. I get a printed copy of check with deposit info as a receipt. Why make it hard.

At end of year, i need about 5 minutes to print off records for my accountant.

I believe I'd change banks.

I bank at the Credit Union. I looked at my check book and paid $12 for 150 checks. I don't use deposit slips, just put my account number on the back of the check and tell them what account I want it deposited in.

If I need cash I just tell them to give me a $1000 or so from my savings account, then I sign receipt for them. Nice to live where they know you and your account number.

Heck I don't have an ATM card.

I've still got a physical debit card, but the credit union I had it through let it expire due to lack of use.

Usually use credit card, check or cash. Had a coworker point out at one point the major difference between a debit card and a credit card is when there's a disputed charge with a debit card you have to argue to get your money back, but with a credit card the dispute is whether you have to pay the charge. After thinking about that, the only thing I ever used the debit card for was withdrawing cash from an ATM .... and after I started working in an area where it was just as (and usually more) convenient to just stop in at a local branch I stopped using that card altogether.

Nice thing is that a couple years ago that institution reviewed their processes and stopped requiring deposit slips all together. Which makes sense given they were going through and counting/adding up all forms of deposits independent of the deposit slip anyway. So now I just hand them an endorsed check and my driver's license, tell them which account to deposit the funds and how much I want back (if any).

Honestly I'm wondering how much longer banks and credit unions will maintain physical locations given how often I've walked into a branch and been the only one there who wasn't an employee... makes me a bit concerned for the next 50-60 years (yeah, I'm young enough and my family tends to live long enough that time frame isn't unrealistic to be considering ...even being concerned about the next 70 years may not be entire out of the question).

Most Canadian banks have senior accounts that provide free checks at age 60 along with other privileges.
Got a shocker this week as my bank was upset that I was not actively using an account.
Heck it was a 'savings' for rainy day emergencies and since I've not had any it was declared dormant.*

Darn banks only want U to spend and borrow so that they can get richer.

*Guess I'll need to withdraw $1.00 and then deposit it back.
